Hossam Amer recently joined Microsoft as an Applied Scientist and works now as an adjunct faculty at the German University in Cairo (GUC). His research interests are Image/Video Compression, Computer Vision, and most recently Natural Language Processing. Before joining Microsoft, Hossam was a Postdoctoral-Fellow at the Multimedia Communications Lab at the University of Waterloo (UW), where he mentored several MSc and PhD students. He obtained his PhD from the same lab, where he received the prestigious annual UW teaching award based on students' and instructors' nominations and published papers in top venues. In addition, Hossam was the Chair of the ECE Graduate Student Association. During his studies, he spent a summer internship at Google’s video team. In collaboration with Intel Egypt Research Labs, Hossam obtained his Masters degree from the MET (CSEN) at the GUC. He completed his undergraduate degree from the MET at an Excellent with Higher Honours cumulative. He worked on his Bachelor Project at the Lab of Multimedia Architectures of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Hossam is a strong believer in constantly transferring his knowledge to make a difference.
